Sopwell House – St Albans – Friday evening 14th March 2014

Richard H Smith Chairman HCC, me, Carol, Erica Smith, Virginia Morgan and Howard Morgan Mayor of Welwyn and Hatfield

We attended a Civic Banquet and Ball last night at Sopwell House in St Albans.  Mayor of St Albans Annie Brewster had invited the nine other Mayors and Chairs of Hertfordshire, the High Sheriff and the Lord Lieutenant. This was a grand occasion  with 31 tables and 350 people attending. We assembled next to the Banqueting Suite for drinks and for an opportunity to chat to the other guests. St Albans also  has a Mace Bearer and after the MC had invited us all to take our seats, the Mace Bearer led the Mayor into the dining room, to applause from the guests. Civic receptions are an opportunity for a Mayor or Chair to invite volunteers and others who have made a contribution and difference in their areas and thank them for their efforts on behalf of others. It is also a chance to promote the Mayor’s charities and in the case of St Albans Mayor ‘The Living Room’ which is a charity that exists to help break the cycle of addiction. During the evening there was a performance by Grove Chorus and after the delicious 3 course meal there were toasts and a speech from the Mayor Annie Brewster.  Very enjoyable evening with good company. See my photos on Flickr to get feeling of the night.
